Since 1973 Outline have been applying that Italian passion and design flair to the science of designing loudspeaker systems and associated technologies. The roots of the company lie with founder Guido Noselli, who as a young musician was dissatisfied with the audio quality being delivered to his audiences. His ambition for sonic improvement coincided with the emergence of the disco scene of the mid-70s and the subsequent demand for powerful, full-range loudspeaker systems for the Italian ‘super clubs’ of the day. Over the past 40 years, Outline has pioneered a number of products and technologies that enhance not only their own products but those of their contemporaries too. A good example is the ‘ET System’, a computer-controlled turntable which greatly simplifies the measurement of the polar dispersion characteristics of loudspeakers. Designed originally for in-house use only, this remarkable device (upgraded to the ET 250-3D in 2008) has since been purchased by many of the world’s best-known loudspeaker manufacturers as well as various universities, institutes and multinational companies working within the field of acoustics.
Similarly, Outline engineers developed and refined the Unimetal® concept for compression driver diaphragms. This process, unique to Outline, produces diaphragms which are extremely thin and light yet retain the necessary structural rigidity by incorporating the voice coil and suspension into a single component. They dissipate heat very quickly and are also extraordinarily efficient at converting electrical energy into acoustic output, resulting in a noticeably more natural and dynamic reproduction.
Outline’s headquarters in Brescia, near Milan in northern Italy, houses all the principal activities of the company. While many companies have moved some or all of their manufacturing offshore, all Outline products are still 100% manufactured in Italy.

Outline Newton is a full-featured, FPGA-based ‘Multi Media Nucleus’ that takes technology convergence for audio-visual systems to the next level. Newton redefines the ‘gold standard’ in modern audio processing and represents another quantum leap forward from Outline. In addition to comprehensive loudspeaker system control facilities it additionally offers media conversion, sync and clock management plus audio distribution with networking capability, along with a very high potential i/o count (up to 216 in both directions simultaneously).
Newton also features several innovations that solve common real-world problems. As standard it is fitted with Analogue, AES, MADI optical, MADI coaxial and Dante inputs and outputs, which can be freely mixed and matched to suit the application. Further, it has the unique ability to simultaneously manage multiple clocks from different sources: this means that several non-synchronised digital protocols can be connected to Newton without affecting the phase coherence of the audio outputs. At a point where systems convergence and integration is more important than ever, this feature is set to make life a great deal easier for many professional users globally.
Newton is also equipped for the most mission-critical applications in terms of backup strategies – for example, unlike any other device currently available, Newton features dual redundant internal power supplies with separate AC inlets. It can also be configured to use different types of input as ‘main’ and ‘backup’ with auto-switch over in the event of failure, an ideal safety net for major televised events and similar applications.
In a major advancement of Outline’s proprietary iMode Processing Platform, the iP24 is a multi-purpose 2-input/4-output DSP loudspeaker controller housed in a single 19” rack space. For the first time, it provides all the features associated with the iMode platform, now able to control external amplifiers and passive sound reinforcement systems.
The iP24 uniquely features WFIR (Warped Frequency Finite Impulse Response) filtering technology, based on the same principle as human hearing. WFIR filtering – not found in other loudspeaker control systems due to the limited amount of DSP they provide – distributes the frequency resolution over a semi-logarithmic scale and produces a more natural auditory response.
Outline iP24 ensures really superior precision. The tools provided by iMode technology to control sound systems’ response include modern Raised Cosine filters. Compared to traditionally implemented parametric functions, they provide better transfer curve shaping, controlling intervention frequency bandwidth more precisely while maintaining minimum-phase response.
All onboard audio I/O can operate in either analogue or digital, and connection via standard Ethernet protocol allows total system control via PC web browser, as well as iPhone / iPad and Mac OS X. The 2 Inputs/4 Outputs can be configured in a number of ways depending on the application requirements. Inputs and outputs can run as either analogue or digital (AES3).
