Outline

Since 1973 Outline have been applying that Italian passion and design flair to the science of designing loudspeaker systems and associated technologies. The roots of the company lie with founder Guido Noselli, who as a young musician was dissatisfied with the audio quality being delivered to his audiences. His ambition for sonic improvement coincided with the emergence of the disco scene of the mid-70s and the subsequent demand for powerful, full-range loudspeaker systems for the Italian ‘super clubs’ of the day. Outline was born.

Over the past 40 years, Outline has pioneered a number of products and technologies that enhance not only their own products but those of their contemporaries too. A good example is the ‘ET System’, a computer-controlled turntable which greatly simplifies the measurement of the polar dispersion characteristics of loudspeakers. Designed originally for in-house use only, this remarkable device (upgraded to the ET 250-3D in 2008) has since been purchased by many of the world’s best-known loudspeaker manufacturers as well as various universities, institutes and multinational companies working within the field of acoustics.

Similarly, Outline engineers developed and refined the Unimetal® concept for compression driver diaphragms. This process, unique to Outline, produces diaphragms which are extremely thin and light yet retain the necessary structural rigidity by incorporating the voice coil and suspension into a single component. They dissipate heat very quickly and are also extraordinarily efficient at converting electrical energy into acoustic output, resulting in a noticeably more natural and dynamic reproduction.

Outline’s headquarters in Brescia, near Milan in northern Italy, houses all the principal activities of the company.  While many companies have moved some or all of their manufacturing offshore, all Outline products are still 100% manufactured in Italy.

Their dedicated R&D team includes professors and graduates in both acoustics and physics. Their deep theoretical expertise is balanced by the decades of hands-on experience of their colleagues, resulting in designs that combine valid acoustical theory with real-world practicality.

After 40 years, Outline remain absolutely committed to researching and designing professional tools that allow creative people to deliver their art to audiences of every size in any location.

VEGAS 6.5

Vegas 6.5 is a super-compact loudspeaker designed for mobile and fixed installation applications, especially where high continuous SPLs need to be delivered in an environment where space is at a premium. The enclosure design includes integral mounting hardware, compatible with various separately available mounting brackets. These provide a huge range of installation options for the unit. Vegas 6.5’s physically small enclosure belies its power. A high-efficiency 6.5” LF transducer and a 1” horn-loaded compression driver produce a maximum output of 122 dB SPL, and the unit will comfortably exceed the performance of most comparable devices loaded with 8” LF drivers. The extraordinary power handling capability of this Vegas fixture means that it can comfortably and reliably reproduce a range of program material with very low distortion and power compression. It is particularly well suited to spoken-word reproduction, as its power and projection deliver class-leading intelligibility, especially in the near/ mid-field.

Vegas 6.5 delivers a very cost-effective installation solution, making very efficient use of amplified channels. Custom RAL color repainting options are available for installations with specific cosmetic requirements. The cabinet is coated with a high-tech black textured polyurea scratch-free finish, which forms an elastoplastic protection that interacts with the plywood structure to further increase the cabinet’s sturdiness and vibration absorption capacity.

Vegas 10 / 12 / 15

The Vegas full-range two-way enclosures are available with a choice of 10”, 12” and 15” low frequency drivers, and all the three models are fitted with a 1.75” compression driver, mounted on a rotatable horn assembly. This, in conjunction with the multi-faceted cabinet design, allows them to be used as floor monitors if required. It also allows for them to be suspended either horizontally or vertically using the integral M8 and M6 rigging points, whilst maintaining the required HF dispersion.

The units are fitted with passive crossovers, and manufactured with top grade components (coils with very low resistance and metallized polypropylene capacitors). The compression driver and waveguide are the same on all three models. The rotatable 90° x 60° waveguide offers a great advantage for installation in small rooms, or those with low headroom. This is because the waveguide can be rotated through 90° to ensure required dispersion is achieved regardless of the orientation the cabinet is installed in. The mouth’s ample dimensions ensure remarkable directivity control. The shape of the cabinets enable them to be also used as stage monitors.

The technology adopted by Outline in the moulding sector has enabled the company to manufacture horns that are rigid and lighter, with obvious benefits in terms of distortion and lower weight. For further extension of the bottom end, and therefore greater dynamics, a line of high performance subwoofers is also available.

Vegas CX

The VEGAS 8 CX, 12 CX and 15 CX are designed and manufactured with the same stringent quality standards applied to Outline’s world class touring audio products. Contemporary design and efficient manufacturing processes allow Outline to deliver these products with first-class power handling and audio fidelity at a very attractive price point. The three VEGAS CX models are ideal multi-purpose, full-range, 2-way bass reflex enclosures equipped with a modern premium custom coaxial driver.

They require only one amplifier channel for correct operation, the frequency splitting between the LF driver and the HF driver being accomplished by the passive crossover network built into the enclosure. The low-loss passive filter ensures a seamless transition between the LF and HF drivers. Combined with the asymmetric cabinet design each VEGAS CX model can be used as a floor monitor or stage front fill if required.

Outline’s high quality coaxial driver gives excellent sonic performance, increased timbre quality and high power handling characteristics. Vegas 8CX and Vegas 15CX incorporate specific rotatable moulded horns which provide Low-Pass acoustical loading on the woofers, increased efficiency in their usable bandwidth, and assist the rejection of out-of-band energy. The high quality internal crossover network is manufactured with top grade components, including coils with very low resistance and metalised polypropylene capacitors. It also features ingenious circuitry to protect the component against excessive current and voltage. Each VEGAS CX delivers high levels of undistorted audio; 8 CX produces a peak of 127 dB, 12 CX 133 dB and 15 CX 136 dB SPL at 1 meter.

The Outline iP24 DSP unit and all Outline amplifiers are recommended for best results. The all-wood 15 mm phenolic-glued Baltic birch enclosure features craftsmanship dovetail joinery construction protected by an epoxy powder coated, resonance-free steel grill over acoustically transparent foam. EIDOS 108S

EIDOS 108S has been designed for venues where low frequencies are needed but discrete placement is required. The compact nature of this cabinet allows installation within the tightest of places. Based on a dual-port band-pass design and utilising a single 8″ drive-unit the EIDOS 108S can faithfully reproduce the lower frequencies down to 38Hz and up to a peak SPL of 118 dB.

All Eidos subwoofers can accurately reproduce the bottom end of the audio spectrum, and are sufficiently dynamic to reproduce all types of music. Performance is very high thanks to the selection and design of the correct components, but also to the careful choice and optimisation of the loading techniques that different enclosures require.

The cabinets are built in sturdy phenolic glued 15 mm Baltic birch plywood, that is resistant to damp, even in outdoor applications. Inside, the cabinets bracing as well as the long tuning ports which act as additional rigidity stiffens the panels to avoid vibration. the external finish is in high quality scratch-resistant black paint. The front of the cabinet is protected by an anti-resonant steel grille covered with sound-transparent foam. There are a number of M8 flying points, enabling EIDOS subwoofers to be easily fitted with flying hardware.

EIDOS 215S

EIDOS 215 S is suited to the high SPL reinforcement of low frequencies, utilising a bass-reflex system design, the 215S is equipped with twin 38 cm (15″) drivers. In order to handle (peak) power values that exceeds the loudspeakers’ (electrical) power capacity, both cabinets use long-excursion woofers fitted with demodulating rings.

EIDOS 218S

This all-new design from Outline complements the existing EIDOS installation range by providing a unit whose low-frequency extension and power handling capabilities exceed those of the dual-15″ EIDOS 215 S module. Consequently it is ideal for those applications requiring super-powerful sub bass delivery, including live music and dance venues.

The EIDOS 218 S is particularly well-suited to reproducing modern dance music as the design provides not only extended low-frequency reproduction (down to 28 Hz) but also tremendous ‘punch’ in and around the frequencies normally produced by both real and synthetic bass drums. This focus and clarity not only enhances the reproduction of program material but also makes the most efficient use of amplifier power.

This is a result of Outline’s proprietary ‘E.R.P.’ (‘Energy Retentive Porting’) design. Based on the principles of fluid dynamics and successfully applied to the science of controlling pneumatic forces within a loudspeaker enclosure, this unique arrangement of specially-shaped ports ensures an optimum laminar airflow. This reduces internal turbulence, maximising the efficiency of the transducers and thus allowing more amplifier power to be converted into acoustic energy.

Such a design requires high-precision manufacturing techniques, and Outline’s engineering team have applied some original production techniques to turn an exciting concept into a physical reality.
